Short Description

High-quality art in public spaces should always respect and enrich its surroundings, becoming an organic part of the environment. Unfortunately, in recent years, we have increasingly witnessed artistic works that neglect this principle—disrupting the harmony of their setting instead of complementing it. This trend has inspired us to dedicate the 18th edition of the Olomouc Street Art Festival to a critical reflection on existing and even lost artistic interventions in Olomouc’s public spaces. Through this festival program, we aim to spark a discussion about what public spaces should look like—spaces that are not only aesthetically valuable but also meaningfully integrated into the life of the city and its inhabitants.

Eligibility

The SAFE Olomouc 2025 festival will explore these artistic legacies, fostering dialogue between the city, art, and its people. This year’s focus is on reflecting and reinterpreting past and present artistic interventions. As recent works increasingly disrupt rather than enrich public spaces, the 18th Olomouc Street Art Festival will critically examine these trends and spark discussion on creating art that meaningfully integrates into urban life.

Curatorial intention

The city has always been a fascinating backdrop for artistic creation. The public space, and especially the Olomouc one, became a breeding ground for the realizations of the most important artists of their time. Olomouc’s Baroque fountains are still tangible proof of this – their unique workmanship and ingenious incorporation into the city’s structure is an example of a harmonious connection between art and environment. Another important era, when the urban space experienced a significant artistic flowering, came at the beginning of the 20th century. This time, however, as a canvas for monumental monuments to important historical figures. One of the unmissable examples is the monument to T. G. Masaryk on Žižka Square, which has become a symbol not only of a certain time, but also of ideals that still resonate in social consciousness today.

It is precisely such realizations, which lend Olomouc its unique character and unmistakable cultural identity, that are becoming the central theme of the SAFE Olomouc 2025 festival. This year, the festival, which has long been dedicated to the dialogue between the city, art and its inhabitants, focuses on the reflection and reinterpretation of not only contemporary, but also historical artistic interventions that shape the face of the city.

Quality art in public space should always respect and enrich its surroundings, be a natural part of it. Unfortunately, in recent years, we have increasingly witnessed that many projects neglect this principle – instead of a harmonious dialogue with the environment, they disrupt it. It was this tendency that inspired us to focus the 18th edition of the Olomouc Street Art Festival on critical reflection on existing or defunct artistic interventions in the Olomouc space. Through this festival program, we want to open a discussion about what a public space should look like, which is not only aesthetically valuable, but also meaningfully integrated into the life of the city and its inhabitants.
