The Joan Mitchell Foundation / Joan Mitchell Center. The Center provides dedicated time and space for artistic contemplation and experimentation on a two-acre campus located in the 7th Ward of New Orleans.

Applications are open for the 2027 Joan Mitchell Center Artists-in-Residence Program.
The Center offers private studio spaces, communal meals, and a retreat-like environment to support visual artists at a pivotal point in their careers. Residencies are either 6 weeks (Summer) or 10 weeks (Spring/Fall).

Eligibility:
- Who: Applicants MUST fit into one of the following two tracks:
- New Orleans Artists: Must have lived in New Orleans as your primary residence for the last 5 years (Orleans, Jefferson, or Plaquemines Parish) OR be a New Orleans native.
- National Artists (Outside NOLA): Must be a past recipient of specific Joan Mitchell Foundation artist support programs (Painters & Sculptors Grants, MFA Grants, Emerging Artist Grants, Emergency Grants, CALL Awards, jumpstART, EAP Council Members, or JMF Art Education Artist Teachers). Note: 2021, 2022, and 2023 Joan Mitchell Fellows are also eligible.
- Age Limit: Applicants must be 21+ years of age.
- Student Ban: Must NOT be enrolled as a student in any degree-granting art program during the residency period.
- Alumni Rule: Must have NEVER previously been an Artist-in-Residence at the Joan Mitchell Center (except as an Early Art Practitioner).
- Vaccination: Artists must be up to date with generally accepted COVID-19 vaccinations.
- Collaboration: Up to two collaborating artists can apply jointly, provided both are individually eligible.
- Guests: The Center cannot accommodate family members, spouses, or partners overnight, and pets are not permitted (ADA service animals are welcome).
Program Benefits & Awards:
- Workspace: Private studio space with 24/7 access.
- Stipend: $150 weekly stipend.
- Meals: Prepared communal meals on-site Monday through Friday (excluding holidays).
- Programming: Professional development, networking, open studios, and 1-on-1 consultations with visiting curators and arts professionals.
- Travel & Lodging (For National Artists Only): Onsite lodging, airfare (or up to $600 in travel reimbursement), and up to $200 in shipping reimbursement.

Application Requirements:
- Submission Portal: Applications must be submitted via Submittable.
- Required Files: 1. Headshot (72 dpi, min 2000px).2. Biography (third-person) and CV/Resume.3. Answers to "Process + Practice" questions.4. Ten (10) work samples (Max 1MB for images; max 1 minute / 20MB for videos). Composite images are allowed for installation shots, but not for displaying multiple different artworks.
- File Naming & Metadata: Files MUST be labeled as
LastName_FirstInitial_Image#(e.g.,Smith_J_Image1). Artists MUST include the title, date, materials, dimensions, and a short description in the metadata field for each upload.

- Application Deadline: Friday, May 29, 2026, at 5:00 PM (CST). (Late submissions are not accepted).
- Notification: Early Fall 2026.
- Spring Session (10 Weeks): March 1 – May 7, 2027.
- Summer Session (6 Weeks): June 7 – July 16, 2027.
- Fall Session (10 Weeks): October 4 – December 10, 2027.
