Founded in 2012 by The Guild of St. George—a charity originally established by John Ruskin—The John Ruskin Prize is organized under the administrative umbrella of The Big Draw, managed by Parker Harris, and supported by the Trinity Buoy Wharf Trust. Inspired by John Ruskin’s belief in art as a tool for seeing, recording, and active social commentary, the prize has evolved into one of the UK's most inclusive multidisciplinary visual arts awards. It honors artists, designers, and craftspeople whose practices challenge traditional boundaries and engage meaningfully with society.

The 9th John Ruskin Prize: Call for Entries

The 9th John Ruskin Prize has opened its international call for entries, inviting artists, designers, and craftspeople from around the world to respond to the theme "Not for Present Delight." Drawing inspiration from Ruskin’s The Seven Lamps of Architecture, the theme challenges makers to reflect on consequence, intention, and responsibility, exploring whether art must serve a purpose beyond itself or exist for pure aesthetic pleasure. A panel of prominent judges will shortlist up to 80 artists for inclusion in a physical exhibition at Trinity Buoy Wharf in London. Four category winners will share a total cash prize fund of £9,500, awarded during the exhibition's private view.

The competition accepts submissions across All 2D and 3D Visual & Applied Arts Mediums, including:

  • Drawing, Painting, Printmaking
  • Sculpture, Ceramics, Glasswork, Metalwork (Gold/Silversmithing)
  • Photography
  • Textiles/Fabric
  • Typography/Calligraphy,
  • Animation, Digital Art, Video/Film,
  • Performance Art (submitted in video format), and Installation

Eligibility

  • Geographic Scope: Open to artists, designers, and makers worldwide.
  • Age Limit: Applicants must be 18 years of age or older at the time of entry.
  • Experience Level: Open to both amateur and professional creators, as well as individual artists or creative collectives.
  • Recency & Human Creation: Works must have been completed within the past 4 years and created entirely by human effort (human creation confirmation required).

Program Benefits & Awards

The competition awards four distinct prizes totaling £9,500:

  • 1st Prize (Supported by the Guild of St George):£3,000
  • Ruskin Mill Trust Prize (Functional Object):£3,000 (awarded for a beautifully crafted functional object)
  • Chelsea Arts Club Trust Prize:£2,500 (awarded to a mid-career artist)
  • The Alan Davidson Under 26 Prize:£1,000 (awarded to an entrant under 26 years old)
  • London Exhibition: Up to 80 shortlisted artists will be featured in a curated physical exhibition at Trinity Buoy Wharf in London from January 28 to February 21, 2027. International entrants can opt to be showcased digitally/in the catalog without shipping physical work.

Pricing is tiered based on applicant status and the number of submitted artworks:

  • Standard Entry: 1 artwork: £25 | 2 artworks: £40 | 3 artworks: £50
  • Under 26 Entry: 1 artwork: £20 | 2 artworks: £30 | 3 artworks: £38
  • International Entry: 1 artwork: £15 | 2 artworks: £20 | 3 artworks: £30

Additional Details

Shortlisted artists in the UK are responsible for packing, insuring, framing, and transporting their physical work to Trinity Buoy Wharf. The judging panel is chaired by Nichola Johnson (Guild of St George) and features prominent creative figures including Clare Twomey, Adam Nathaniel Furman, Ishbel Myerscough RA, and Miranda Forrester.
