ARCUS Project is the most prominent and longest-running residency program in the field of contemporary art in Japan. Since 1994, it has supported artists engaged in creative activities worldwide by providing time, space, and a vibrant community. In 2025, ARCUS Project was selected as one of the Top 10 Best Artist Residency Programs in the World.

Title & Description:

Applications are open for the ARCUS PROJECT 2026 IBARAKI ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM.

Located around an hour from Tokyo, this residency allows artists to come into contact with the contemporary art scene in Japan and devote themselves to creative endeavors in a calm environment. The program emphasizes research-based experimentation and practices focusing on individually defined inquiries.

It welcomes ideas for artworks and projects that develop out of encounters with people, the land, and culture, aspiring to form critical spaces that are open and international. The experience culminates in open studios to present initial results.

Eligibility:

The program is open to artists in the field of contemporary art.

Program Benefits & Awards:

This is a full-funded program. Benefits include:

  • Stipend: 540,000 JPY.

  • Travel: Round-trip airfare.

  • Accommodation: A private furnished apartment.

  • Studio: A private studio (65m²) located at the New Location: ARCUS Studio (in Koya elementary school).

  • Support: Dedicated staff support and regular tutorials with a curator to explore thoughts, techniques, and approaches.
