Organizer Information

Kunsthalle Wien is the City of Vienna's primary institution for international contemporary art and discourse. Conceptualized as a temporary edifice in the shape of a container by architect Adolf Krischanitz, Kunsthalle Wien opened its doors at Karlsplatz in 1992. The institution does not maintain a collection of its own, instead building its programme around individual and themed exhibitions, commissioning new works and partnering with national and international artists and institutions. In May 2001, the Kunsthalle moved into its current headquarters in the MuseumsQuartier, designed by Ortner & Ortner, where the historic Winterreithalle of the former imperial mews was extended with a functional annex combining the historic building with contemporary architecture. The original yellow container at Karlsplatz was removed at that point, leaving a smaller, 221 m² exhibition space in a glass pavilion, also designed by Krischanitz, which continues to host programming today. Kunsthalle Wien is an institution of Stadt Wien Kunst GmbH and sister institution of Fotoarsenal Wien, with special emphasis on research into artistic practices and support for local and international artists. As stated in the posting, Stadt Wien Kunst GmbH is a subsidiary of the City of Vienna, offering institutional security and stability alongside an internationally oriented, content-driven working environment.
