S-MAK, DOCK 20, and Druckwerk Lustenau have partnered to offer this residency. The program centers around the collection, history, and present state of Vorarlberg embroidery. In the newly opened S-MAK, embroidery is understood not just as a textile product, but as a cultural practice involving design, technique, labor, and global connections.
Title & Description:
Applications are open for the "Between Pattern and Memory" Residency.
This research-based, four-week residency invites participants to investigate the S-MAK collection and translate their findings into contemporary formats. Participants will choose a clearly defined collection inventory or thematic complex and develop an independent, process-oriented, or fragmentary project (e.g., artworks, texts, essays, prototypes, installations, or performative formats).

Eligibility:
- Who: Artists, designers, theorists, as well as cultural, social, and humanities scholars.
- Interests: Candidates should have a strong interest in textiles, design history, material culture, or archival work. Interdisciplinary approaches are expressly desired.
Program Benefits & Awards:
- Financial Support: A €1,500 honorarium plus a €500 material budget per resident.
- Travel: Travel costs are covered (by arrangement).
- Workspace: Access to facilities at S-MAK and Druckwerk in Lustenau.
Work Exchange & Obligations:
- Archive Engagement: Residents are expected to review and interpret archive/collection materials and develop an independent artistic, theoretical, design, or hybrid approach.
- Public Engagement: A public presentation of the research or process is expected at the end of the residency.
