California Academy of Sciences presents the BigPicture Natural World Photography Competition. Now in its 13th year, this
competition celebrates and illustrates the diversity of life on Earth while inspiring conservation efforts. Chaired by award-winning conservation photographer Suzi Eszterhas, the Academy provides photographers worldwide with a platform to showcase their work and connect with a global audience.

BigPicture 2026 Natural World Photography Competition
BigPicture 2026 invites photographers worldwide to submit high-quality images that highlight nature, wildlife, and conservation themes. Participants can showcase their creativity across multiple categories, including Art of Nature, Aquatic Life, Winged Life, Landscapes, Waterscapes, and Flora, Terrestrial Wildlife, Human/Nature, and Photo Story: Beyond the Photo. Winners receive cash prizes, exhibition opportunities at the California Academy of Sciences, and global recognition for their work.

Eligibility
- Open to all photographers worldwide.
- Excludes employees, volunteers, Board Members of the Academy and their households.
- Entrants must be legal residents where permitted; void where prohibited.
Program Benefits & Awards
- $12,300 USD in total cash prizes:
- Grand Prize: $5,000
- First Place winners in each of 7 categories: $1,000 each
- Additional finalists receive certificates of recognition
- People’s Choice award: $300
- Exhibition at the California Academy of Sciences

- Opportunity for professional exposure and recognition in conservation photography
Application Fee
- $25 for up to 10 single image submissions
- $15 per Photo Story submission (1 video + up to 5 images)
- Payment via secure online portal; fees non-refundable

Additional Details
- Entrants retain ownership of submitted images but grant the Academy a non-exclusive license to display and publish entries
