Organizer Information
The City of Nuremberg (Stadt Nürnberg), through its cultural office (NürnbergKultur) and the administrative backing of the Kunsthalle Nürnberg, provides structural grants to support independent cultural work. Recognizing that secure infrastructure is a vital prerequisite for a thriving creative ecosystem, the municipality works to maintain, protect, and expand sustainable production environments for professional cultural producers within the city limits.
Title & Description
Nuremberg Studio Grant (Atelierförderung).
This annual municipal funding program assists full-time professional visual artists by providing partial, retroactive financial support for their creative production spaces. Designed to combat workspace scarcity and rising urban overheads, the grant functions as a single, retroactive cash payout for the current calendar year. Funding covers documented operational rental or ownership overheads, directly stabilizing the material conditions required for sustained artistic research and production in the region.
Structural & Infrastructure Options:
Beyond individual workspace support, the fund allows for secondary real estate optimization:
- Individual Workspaces: Renting, self-building, or purchasing a dedicated studio space.
- Apartment Studios: In exceptional cases, studio spaces integrated within an artist's personal apartment can be considered. Applicants must explicitly state the exact percentage of floor area split between living and working space, as only the pro-rata portion dedicated to creative production is eligible for funding.
- Infrastructure Funding Development: Up to 20% of the total annual grant pool can be allocated to support the structural expansion, renovation, or building modifications of multi-artist studio complexes and workshop buildings, provided these premises remain permanently designated for fine art production.
Categories
Visual Arts, Painting, Sculpture, Photography, Installation, Printmaking, Drawing, Performance, Textile Art, and Ceramics.
Eligibility
- Geographic Focus: Open exclusively to professional visual artists whose primary work location and active creative practice are situated within the city limits of Nuremberg, Germany.
- Professional Standards: Applicants must pursue their fine art practice on a full-time basis. Professional standing is typically verified via a completed degree from a recognized academy of fine arts, art university, or university of applied sciences. Alternatively, artists without a formal degree can demonstrate equivalent professional qualifications through a substantial, verifiable track record of continuous solo and group exhibition activities within contemporary art networks.
- Secondary Employment Thresholds: To preserve the full-time focus of the pool, secondary employment is strictly capped. Engaging in side employment is permitted only if it does not exceed 13 hours per week as an art instructor or up to 20 hours per week in other art-related professions.
- Financial Thresholds: Documented baseline studio costs (including standard utilities and heating) must equal a minimum of 150 € per month. Furthermore, the lease or tenure of the workspace must be legally secured for the entire application year.
