The European Marine Board (EMB) is seeking two artists or groups of artists for the 2025-2026 edition of the EMBracing the Ocean artist-in-residence programme. This initiative supports artists working in diverse disciplines to co-create work with ocean scientists, aiming to:
- Raise societal awareness of the ocean.
- Inspire sustainable behavior.
- Provide new insights and perspectives on marine science. The selected artists will receive a grant of €10,000 to support their residency over a 12-month period.

Eligibility:
- Open to artists from all disciplines (visual, literary, performing, traditional, and indigenous arts).
- Applications are welcome from both emerging and established artists.
- Prior experience in co-creation with scientists and/or sustainability-related projects is desirable.
- Applicants must collaborate with at least one ocean scientist (affiliated with a research institution or university) who agrees to participate in the project.
Theme:
The programme focuses on co-creation between artists and ocean scientists, exploring ocean-related themes such as:
- Marine ecosystem conservation and restoration
- Ocean pollution and climate change
- Sustainable fisheries and resource management
- Raising societal awareness and emotional connection to the ocean

Submission Requirements:
Applicants need to provide:
- Proposal Summary (150 words max.)
- Detailed Description (500 words max.) – including topic of interest, co-creation approach, and collaborating scientist details.
- Public Engagement Plan (150 words max.) – target audience, awareness-building strategies, and impact plans.
- Description of Creative Practice (150 words max.) – artistic background, impact, and relevant work.
- Previous Collaborations or Motivation (150 words max.) – experience working with scientists and sustainability topics.
- Provisional Monthly Timeline – expected activities over 12 months.
- Provisional Budget – estimated costs for artist fees, materials, travel, etc.
- Letter of Agreement from a collaborating scientist.
- Artist(s) CV
- Portfolio (optional) – up to 5 MB file in PDF/MP3/wav/zip formats.
Selection Process:
- Applications will be reviewed by the EMBracing the Ocean Committee.
- Shortlisted applicants will be invited for an online interview on March 24-25, 2025, along with their scientific collaborators.
- Selection criteria include:
- Quality and feasibility of proposal.
- Artistic merit and previous work.
- Co-creation potential between art and science.
- Audience reach and societal impact.
- Longevity of impact beyond the residency.
- The committee will ensure diversity in art forms, topics, target audiences, gender, and geographical representation.
