Organizer Information
The Walker Youngbird Foundation is a United States-based nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting Native and Indigenous artists through funding, mentorship, professional development, and public visibility initiatives. Founded to address the systemic underrepresentation of Indigenous creatives within mainstream arts funding and exhibition structures, the foundation invests in artists whose work strengthens cultural continuity while advancing contemporary artistic practices.
One of its flagship initiatives is the Emerging Native Arts Grant, a recurring award program designed specifically for early-career Indigenous artists. Through direct financial support, mentorship opportunities, and curated public exposure, the foundation seeks to help Native artists develop sustainable careers while amplifying Indigenous perspectives within the broader cultural landscape.
The program recognizes the importance of both traditional and contemporary forms of Indigenous expression, encouraging projects that honor cultural heritage while engaging with current artistic conversations. By supporting artists at pivotal moments in their careers, the Walker Youngbird Foundation contributes to the long-term growth and visibility of Native arts across North America.
Title & Description
Emerging Native Arts Grant 2026
The Emerging Native Arts Grant is an opportunity for early-career Native and Indigenous artists seeking financial support and professional recognition for a proposed creative project. Awarded twice annually by the Walker Youngbird Foundation, the grant provides funding, mentorship, and exhibition opportunities to artists working at the intersection of cultural tradition and contemporary artistic innovation.
The program is designed to support projects that result in publicly shareable outcomes, such as exhibitions, installations, publications, or other visual presentations. Applicants are encouraged to propose work that reflects strong artistic vision, cultural integrity, creative experimentation, and contemporary relevance.
The grant welcomes projects that explore Indigenous identity, storytelling, material traditions, and new approaches to artistic practice. Selected artists will receive support to complete a specific project while gaining access to professional guidance and increased visibility through a curated showcase of their work.
The initiative aims to strengthen Indigenous artistic voices, expand opportunities for Native creatives, and provide meaningful resources to artists who may face barriers to accessing traditional arts funding systems.
