The Emmanuel College Artist-in-Residence program provides a unique platform for established and emerging artists to develop new work within a supportive academic environment. Located in the Fenway neighborhood of Boston, this Residency connects practicing artists with the college community, bringing contemporary Studio practice to the heart of campus life.
Title & Description
Emmanuel College Artist-in-Residence Program (ECAR) 2026
ECAR is an intensive six-week summer residency designed to support four artists—one in each of the specific categories listed below. The program provides uninterrupted time and space for established and emerging artists to develop new or ongoing work in a supportive academic environment. Residents are encouraged to experiment and are integrated into the college community through guest lectures and a closing exhibition.
Categories
The residency is strictly divided into four specific categories: Ceramics, Photography, Printmaking, and Social Practice. (Note: Artists have access to other facilities like the Wood Shop, Design Lab, and Painting Studio, but must apply under one of the four main categories.)
Eligibility
- National & International: Open to professional artists from any country.
- Non-Student Status: Applicants must not be currently enrolled in any academic degree program.
- Skills: Conversational proficiency in English is required.
- Residency Requirement: Artists must be on-site for the full duration (June 8 – July 19, 2026).
Program Benefits & Awards
- Stipend: A $1,500 USD honorarium.
- Travel Support: International artists may be eligible for up to $1,000 USD for travel and visa reimbursement.
- Accommodation: Provided in the college dormitories with access to a kitchen.
- Studio Access: Use of communal college studio facilities (Ceramics, Print Shop, Darkroom, etc.).
- Exhibition: Participation in an on-campus closing exhibition.

Application Requirements
Applicants must submit a single PDF (max 10MB) containing:
- Resume/CV.
- Artist Statement.
- Portfolio: 20 images of recent work with descriptions.
- Project Proposal: A clear plan for what you intend to create or research during the 6-week residency.

Additional Details
- Art Donation: At the completion of the residency, each artist is required to donate one piece of work to the Emmanuel College permanent collection.
- Engagement: Artists must spend 3 hours with the summer art history course discussing their process.
- Costs: Artists are responsible for their own material and food costs.
