The Fine Arts Work Center (FAWC). An artist-led organization based in Provincetown, Massachusetts, established nearly 60 years ago. FAWC supports artistic freedom, nurtures creative connections, and offers one of the leading residency programs in the world.

Applications are open for the FAWC 7-Month Fellowships (2026-2027).

Each year, the Work Center offers 20 seven-month residencies to a juried group of emerging visual artists, fiction writers, and poets. Fellows pursue their work independently in a diverse and supportive community, give public readings or solo exhibitions, and engage with illustrious visiting artists and writers. (Note: FAWC offers First-Year and Second-Year fellowships across disciplines).

Eligibility:

  • Who: Emerging visual artists, fiction writers, and poets. Non-U.S. citizens are welcome to apply (but must secure their own visas and provide an SSN or ITIN if accepted).
  • Age & Student Status: Applicants must be 18 years or older and must NOT participate in a degree program during the Fellowship year.
  • Writing Specifics: Writers who have published (or are contracted to publish) a full-length book of creative work in any genre are NOT eligible. You must apply strictly as either "Fiction" or "Poetry" (Memoir/Nonfiction is judged as Fiction). Writing samples must be strictly anonymous.
  • Visual Arts Specifics: Open to emerging artists without high-profile museum exhibitions, tenure-track professorships, or mid-career awards.
  • Attendance: Artists must be in residence with few absences (not exceeding 14 consecutive days or a total of 30 days during the 7 months).

Program Benefits & Awards:

  • Stipend: A monthly stipend of $1,250 plus an exit stipend of $1,000.
  • Housing & Workspace: A modestly furnished apartment with a private bathroom and kitchen. Visual Arts Fellows also receive an approx. 400 sq. ft. studio. (Note: Spouses/partners may accompany the Fellow, but partner workspaces are not provided).
  • Special Funding (Automatic Consideration):
    • Rona Jaffe Foundation Fellowship: Fully funds the residency + a $2,500 travel/living prize for an emerging woman writer of exceptional promise (U.S. permanent residents only).
    • Fellowship Access Fund: Grants ranging from $500 to $2,500 to help candidates with particular financial needs accept the fellowship.

Application Requirements:

  • Visual Arts: Up to 10 images or 5 minutes of video of work made in the last four years, a CV/resume, and a questionnaire. (No artist statement or recommendations required).
  • Writing: An anonymous writing sample (no name, publications, or awards listed anywhere on the sample).
