Organizer Information

Afterall was founded in 1998 by curator Charles Esche and artist Mark Lewis at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, University of the Arts London (UAL), originating as a publishing project. The organization launched Afterall journal in 1999, offering in-depth analysis of artists' work alongside contextual essays. Afterall became a formal UAL Research Centre in 2016. In April 2006, Afterall Books launched, adding two further publication strands to the journal: the One Work series (a library of small books, each focused on a single important work of contemporary art, published in partnership with MIT Press) and the Afterall Critical Readers series, which surveys significant areas of modern and contemporary art practice through commissioned and reprinted texts, artists' statements, and manifestos. Afterall works with partner institutions across five continents, is a founding member of the Common Practice advocacy group, and is closely linked to Central Saint Martins' MRes Art: Exhibition Studies postgraduate pathway.

Il Posto, the fellowship's co-organizing partner, is an art foundation dedicated to the conservation, study, and diffusion of contemporary art from Chile and Latin America, with a collection of more than 400 works produced from the 1970s to the present, and a public-facing research and documentation center (Il Posto Documentos) comprising a library and documentary archive.
