Short Description
IMIYENZI Exhibition in Houston is a community-rooted exhibition in Houston, Texas, USA, exploring East-African traditional healing practices, resilience, and cultural memory. We are inviting artists of East-African descent to submit digital work related to these themes. We are inviting artists of East African heritage—across the continent and the diaspora—to submit digital artworks for IMIYENZI, a community-rooted exhibition exploring healing, resilience, and cultural memory.
Eligibility
We welcome submissions from artists who identify with East African heritage, whether through ancestry, cultural connection, or lived experience.
For the purposes of this exhibition, East Africa includes
Burundi, Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda
Accepted mediums include photography, digital collage or illustration, audio or sound-based work, and 3D renderings. We are seeking original artworks that can be exhibited digitally, such as:

Exhibition Details
We are seeking 10 artworks to be featured in a group exhibition opening in September 2025 at 5301.18a Arts & Culture Lab in Houston, Texas, USA.
Selected artists will be contacted in August 2025 and will be required to sign a consent form confirming their permission for the work to be exhibited. Jury includes of artists, educators and curators from East-Africa and Houston.
If any prints of the submitted artworks are sold during the exhibition, the artist will receive 70% of the original asking price as set by the artist.
Curators short biographies
Canda
Bruce Niyonkuru, known artistically as Canda, is an interdisciplinary artist, educator, and cultural advocate whose work bridges the gap between personal expression and social transformation., Canda’s journey into the arts was largely self-taught, driven by a desire to create spaces for healing and reflection. He grew up without access to formal arts education, which fueled his mission to ensure that others, especially those from marginalized communities, can experience the transformative power of creativity.
Melissa Kurkut
Melissa Kurkut is an artist, curator, and researcher working across photography, community organizing, and experimental archives. Born in the Netherlands to Rwandan and Kurdish parents, her practice centers on fragmented histories, displacement, and the politics of visibility.
