Short Description
The Centre for Advanced Study “inherit. heritage in transformation” at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (a BMBF-funded Käte Hamburger Kolleg) invites applications for its Inherit Fellowships for 2026-7. This program supports up to fifteen international fellows who will engage in research exploring historical, contemporary, and potential future transformations in heritage—with a specific focus on “Heritage Loss” (dismantling, destruction, disinheritance, disposal, renouncing, and revising). The fellowship welcomes research-based creative approaches as well as practical and artistic responses.

Submission Requirements:
Cover Letter: Include proposed start date, length of fellowship, project title, and motivation for applying
Project Proposal:
Up to 2 A4 pages of text (minimum Times New Roman, size 11) plus an annex of up to 6 pages of images (if relevant)
Must include a title, abstract (150 words), a summary linking the work to “Heritage Loss” and the guiding themes, a timetable, and a list of necessary resources
Curriculum Vitae (CV): Detail higher education, fellowships/prizes/awards, and a full list of publications (with translations for non-English titles, if applicable)
Additional Materials:
Either two articles/chapters (published or unpublished, maximum 20,000 words total) OR, for artists, a portfolio of artworks, films, or exhibitions clearly indicating your role and previous showings
Selection Process:
Applications are evaluated by an internal committee in conjunction with an advisory board
Emphasis on originality, capacity to expand scholarship or practice, relevance to “Heritage Loss” and guiding themes, and overall quality of the proposal and CV
Final selection will also consider diversity, geographical spread, and disciplinary mix
Eligibility
Open to international applicants, including both experienced and early-career postdoctoral researchers, as well as artists, filmmakers, and curators
Applicants must have completed a PhD (or equivalent experience with a significant publishing record) or, for practitioners, possess a substantial portfolio of accomplished work
Proposals should be based on original empirical or archival study or creative work

Monthly stipend (rate based on career stage and family accompaniment for German-based applicants)
Reimbursement for return journey (economy) and visa costs
Workspace provided at the Centre
Fellows are responsible for accommodation, health insurance, and additional personal costs
