Organizer Information
The KBB – Kulturveranstaltungen des Bundes in Berlin GmbH forms the common foundation for three cultural institutions: the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale), the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, and the Berliner Festspiele, which includes the Festspielhaus and its exhibition venue, the Gropius Bau. The Gropius Bau itself occupies a historic building completed in 1881, originally constructed as Berlin's Museum of Applied Arts by architects Martin Gropius and Heino Schmieden. Severely damaged in the Second World War, the building was reconstructed and reopened in 1981, and has been operated by the Berliner Festspiele since 2001. Today, the Gropius Bau is one of Europe's leading exhibition venues, hosting large-scale international exhibitions in contemporary art, photography, archaeology, and cultural history without maintaining a permanent collection of its own.
