Title & Description

Letters to Tomorrow – Open Call Exhibition

“Letters to Tomorrow” is an open exhibition organised by Aspex Portsmouth as part of the city’s centenary celebrations marking 100 years since Portsmouth was officially recognised as a city. The project invites participants from Portsmouth and Hampshire to contribute artworks that imagine, question, or speculate on the future of the city one hundred years from now.

The conceptual framework is inspired by the parallel exhibition “2126: What If?”, which explores speculative futures and long-term imaginaries. “Letters to Tomorrow” extends this theme into a community-oriented format, asking participants to reflect on their hopes, concerns, and visions for the future. Artists are encouraged to consider what might change, what might persist, and what they would wish to preserve or transform in their urban and social environment.

The open call is intentionally broad and inclusive, welcoming responses from both professional artists and individuals with no formal artistic training. The emphasis is on expression, imagination, and reflection rather than technical mastery. The resulting exhibition will function as a collective archive of speculative messages addressed to the future city.
