Deadlines
- March 1: For residencies in August-November (Submittable portal opens in mid-November).
- October 1: For residencies in March-July (Submittable portal opens in mid-April).
Eligibility:
- Open to nonfiction writers of all backgrounds and experience levels
- Applicants must be 18 years or older
- Residents must be working on nonfiction projects
Named Fellowships:
Applicants may choose to be considered for the following named fellowships (though not required):
- Charm City Fellow: Awarded to 2 applicants from MD, PA, D.C., NJ, VA & VI, with a preference for Baltimore/BIPOC applicants. Includes a travel stipend.
- Institute of American Indian Arts Fellow: Awarded to 1 applicant annually who identifies as Native American (no stipend currently).
- Nancy Graves Fellow: Awarded to 1 applicant whose prior work is archive-based and uses the Nancy Graves Memorial Library collection as inspiration (no stipend currently).
- Vincent Prize Fellow: Awarded to 2 applicants who identify as trans*/genderqueer, with potential stipend based on funding.
How to Apply:
- Go to the Nonfiction Writing Residency application form on Submittable.
- Sign in or Register if you don't have an account.
- Upload the following:
- Artist Statement
- Work Samples
- Biographical Statement
- Scheduling Preferences
- Add contact information (name, address, phone, email, preferred pronouns, ethnicity).
- Enter payment information for the $45 application fee.
- Submit your application once all documents are uploaded.
- If any issues arise post-submission, contact residency@millayarts.org for editing assistance.
Submission Requirements:

Artist Statement
- 1 page maximum, single-spaced, 11-12 pt font
- Discuss your creative process, what you aim to work on during the residency (no personal information).

Work Samples
- 20 pages maximum, double-spaced, 11-12 pt font
- Submit work that best represents your writing (can be works-in-progress, published, or excerpts).
- An optional 1-page context can be included if needed.
- No biographical information allowed in the submission (blind jury process).

Biographical Statement
- 1 page maximum, single-spaced, 11-12 pt font
- A third-person narrative listing your education, professional experience, accomplishments, and how you found out about the residency.

Scheduling Preferences
- Applicants may choose up to 3 preferred residency months for scheduling.
- Shorter Residencies (12-day sessions) are available in June and September.
Selection Process:
- Blind Jury Process: Applications are judged solely on merit. Personal information must be removed from the statement and work samples.
- Jurors are practicing professionals, critics, artists, and alumni, and they rotate each year.
- If applying to both rounds in one year, your work will be reviewed by the same panel twice.
Program Benefits:
