Millay Arts offers multidisciplinary artists the gift of time and space through residencies designed to support the creative process. These residencies aim to enrich artists’ lives, foster connections, and help bring works to life that might not otherwise be realized.
Information & Application Details:
- Application Portals: Open in mid-November and mid-April.
- Deadlines:
- March 1 (for residencies August–November)
- October 1 (for residencies March–July)
- Residency Length: Typically 3.5 weeks, with 12-day sessions available in June & September.
- Application Fee: $45
Eligibility:
- Open to visual artists across disciplines.
- International and U.S.-based artists welcome.
- Fellowships have additional eligibility criteria (detailed below).

How to Apply:
- Register/Sign in via the application portal.
- Upload Required Documents:
- Artist Statement: One page, describing your work and what you’d focus on in residency.
- Work Samples: Up to six pieces (JPG/TIFF/GIF) + three additional detail shots.
- Image List: Title, dimensions, date, and medium (one page max).
- Biographical Statement: One page, third-person narrative with education, experience, and accomplishments.
- Scheduling Preferences: Up to three preferred residency periods.
- Select Fellowship Consideration (optional): Indicate eligibility for named fellowships.
- Payment & Submission: Enter payment details and click “Apply” (submissions are final).
Submission Requirements:
- Visual Works: Max 6 samples (+3 details).
- Video/Performance/Sound: 5 minutes max (uploaded directly — no external links).
- Text Documents: Single-spaced, 11–12 pt font, max 1 page each.
- Blind Jury Process: Remove all identifying information from submissions.
Selection Process:
- Blind Jury: Applications are anonymized and assigned a number.
- Jury Composition: Rotating panel of artists, critics, and academics (local, regional, national).
- Evaluation Criteria: Artistic merit, potential for growth, and project vision.

- Named Fellowships:
- Charm City Fellow and Beyond: 2 artists/year from MD, PA, D.C., NJ, VA & VI (preference for Baltimore/BIPOC artists) + travel stipend.
- Institute of American Indian Arts Fellow: 1 Native American artist/year (no stipend).
- Nancy Graves Fellow: 1 artist/year for archive-based research (no stipend).
- Vincent Prize Fellow: 2 trans*/genderqueer artists/year (potential stipend, funding-dependent).
