The Mondriaan Fund is the Dutch national fund for the visual arts and cultural heritage sector, one of six public cultural funds (rijkscultuurfondsen) operating under the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. The fund invests approximately €43 million annually on behalf of the Ministry, supporting hundreds of activities, projects, and programmes initiated by more than 2,000 applicants each year, and processes over 3,500 applications annually across the Netherlands and the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. Beyond individual grants, the fund is responsible for organizing the Dutch entry to the Venice Biennale and the Prix de Rome, and runs the talent exhibition Prospects during Art Rotterdam, alongside an international exchange programme of organized trips and an active visitors programme. The fund supports artists, curators, museums, and heritage institutions through a range of grant schemes, of which the Residency grant is one.

Mondriaan Fund Residency Grant
The Residency grant supports visual artists, curators, and art observers who want to deepen their professional practice and expand their networks through a working period at a recognized residency in the Netherlands or abroad. Participants spend time at a Dutch or international studio designated by the Fund, allowing them to explore new national or international contacts and markets. The aim is the creation of work that makes a valuable contribution to contemporary visual art and/or cultural heritage in the Netherlands and/or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. The Fund currently lists around ten open host residencies under this scheme, each sharing the same application deadline and general eligibility rules but differing in location, facilities, and specific terms (see Location section below).

Eligibility
For visual artists:
- Must have been working as a professional visual artist for at least 1 year (measured from the diploma date for HBO Bachelor's graduates in a visual arts curriculum, or from the date of first presenting work in professional art circles otherwise)
- Must be artistically active in the visual arts and embedded in professional visual arts practice in the Netherlands and/or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom
- Must not be receiving other financial support from the Mondriaan Fund covering the same costs at the time of application
- Cannot apply while enrolled in Bachelor's, Master's, postdoctoral, or PhD programmes (exception: part-time programmes of less than 20 hours a week, excluding Bachelor's programmes)
- May apply for 2 residencies per application round, with a separate application form and PDF attachments for each
- Maximum of 1 Residency grant awarded per individual applicant per calendar year
- Applicants previously rejected for the Artist Project grant on artistic-performance grounds may not apply for the Residency grant within 12 months of that rejection
For curators and art observers:
- Must have been working for at least 1 year as a curator or art observer in visual arts or cultural heritage, demonstrable through publications, exhibitions, research projects, or initiated projects
- Must be artistically active and embedded in professional visual arts and/or cultural heritage practice in the Netherlands and/or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom
- Must not be receiving other financial support from the Mondriaan Fund covering the same costs at the time of application
- Cannot apply while enrolled in Bachelor's, Master's, postdoctoral, or PhD programmes
- May apply for 2 residencies per application round, with a separate application form and PDF attachments for each
- Maximum of 1 Residency grant awarded per individual applicant per calendar year
Program Benefits & Awards
- Grant covers travel, accommodation, and material costs
- The costs of living space, working space, and on-site support at the residency are paid directly to the residency by the Mondriaan Fund
- Grant amounts vary depending on the location and duration of the residency
- Higher grants may be available for residents living in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom, to cover potentially higher travel costs, assessed on a case-by-case basis

Additional Details
- Applications are checked for completeness by Mondriaan Fund staff, then assessed by an advisory committee against quality-of-practice, cultural-entrepreneurship, and plan/motivation criteria; the committee prioritizes among positively assessed candidates since not all can be funded
- If an applicant applies for two different residencies in the same round, the quality/development and cultural-entrepreneurship assessment is conducted once and applies to both applications
- The advisory committee or the residency itself makes the final participant selection from recommended candidates, which may include a meeting between the residency's management and the proposed candidate; if no suitable candidate emerges from applications, the residency may propose its own candidates
