Organizer Information
Mudam Luxembourg – Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean opened in 2006 in a purpose-built building designed by the renowned Sino-American architect Ieoh Ming Pei, located in Park Dräi Eechelen and overlooking the historic city of Luxembourg. The museum stands on the site of the former Fort Thüngen, on the southwestern edge of the Kirchberg plateau, and was inaugurated on 1 July 2006 by Grand Duke Jean, to whom the building is dedicated.
Independent sources confirm that the project, first proposed in the late 1980s, took nearly two decades to realize due to disputes over location, design, and construction, ultimately costing approximately $100 million. As Luxembourg had no existing public modern art collection when the museum opened, Mudam built its holdings largely from scratch; the collection today comprises more than 200 works by upwards of 100 artists, spanning painting, sculpture, photography, and multimedia installation. Through its collection, exhibitions, artistic and educational programmes, and partnerships, Mudam Luxembourg aims to advance its mission to present the most relevant contemporary art of our time to the largest possible public.
