The Goethe-Institut is the cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with a global presence. It facilitates international cultural exchange, promotes the German language, and supports the development of culture and science worldwide. For this residency, Goethe-Institut Norway collaborates with the Edvard Munch Studio Foundation in Oslo, a center dedicated to preserving and promoting the legacy of Edvard Munch.
Title & Description
Munch-Goethe Artist Residency in Oslo 2026
invites visual artists residing in Germany to engage with themes or questions connected to Edvard Munch’s life and work. Residents will live in a spacious apartment with an integrated studio on Munch’s former property in Ekely, Oslo, from October 1st to November 30th, 2026. The residency encourages artistic research, creation, and exchange, including engagement with the Norwegian art scene.

Eligibility
- Full-time practicing visual artists
- Minimum two years rof esidency in Germany
- Early-career and emerging artists are particularly encouraged
- Degree in arts or equivalent professional experience required
Program Benefits & Awards
- Free accommodation with an integrated studio in Oslo
- Stipend: €2,000 per month
- Travel allowance: €500 (round trip from Germany)
- Option to bring a partner or family (note: stipend/allowances remain the same)
- Professional guidance and networking support from Goethe-Institut and Edvard Munch Studio Foundation
- Participation in up to two public events (artist talk, open studio, etc.)
- Alumni recognition on organizational websites and social media

Application Requirements
- Motivation letter (max. 500 words) addressing:
- Reason for applying
- Connection to Edvard Munch and Norway
- Project plan for residency
- Current CV (max. 2 pages) with website/social media links
- Artistic practice portfolio: up to six images and/or video/audio excerpts (max. 2 minutes), plus links to relevant projects
- Proposal for a public event during residency
