Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) is a public university in Chicago, Illinois, founded in 1867 by the Cook County Board of Commissioners as the first teacher training school in Cook County. NEIU is both a Hispanic-Serving Institution and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution, and is the Midwest's longest-standing four-year public Hispanic-Serving Institution, regarded as one of the most diverse public universities in the nation. The university enrolls more than 5,000 students, with African American, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American students representing roughly 67 percent of the student body.

NEIU's mission centers on preparing a diverse community of students for leadership and service in the region and in a dynamic multicultural world, with the university's stated values including the inclusion of a broad spectrum of students, staff, and faculty, and the fostering of global perspectives and open, respectful exchange of ideas. Within this context, NEIU's Art + Design Department offers a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art, Art History, and K–12 Art Education, alongside a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design, housed in the Salme Harju Steinberg Fine Arts Center.

Title & Description

NEIU Art + Design Studio Art Residency

The NEIU Art + Design Studio Art Residency invites working artists to connect with NEIU's diverse population of art and design students, fostering an exchange of ideas and techniques between students and visiting practitioners. Visiting Artists are expected to demonstrate a commitment to their own artistic practice alongside an interest in engaging directly with NEIU's students and creative community.

Each Visiting Artist receives an honorarium and full semester-long access to the NEIU Art + Design facilities relevant to their specific project. Over the course of the residency, the Visiting Artist presents their work in a public academic forum, leads a hands-on workshop, and participates as a guest panelist in a Portfolio Review Day for NEIU's Art + Design students.

Eligibility

  • Open to emerging to mid-career, Chicago-based artists (per NEIU's Visiting Artist Program page, which states the program offers two residency opportunities each semester for emerging to mid-career Chicago-based artists) neiu
  • Visiting Artists should demonstrate a commitment to their artistic practice and an interest in engaging with NEIU's students and creative community (as stated in the original program description)

Program Benefits & Awards

  • Full semester access to NEIU Art + Design facilities relevant to the artist's project focus (Art + Tech, Ceramics, Drawing, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture)
  • Supplies may be requested with guidance and approval from Studio Area personnel
  • Opportunity to exhibit work in a group exhibition in the NEIU Fine Arts Center Gallery on campus

  • NEIU Art + Design facilities include: a Design Studio with the largest collection of Riso drums at any university in Chicago, including two two-color digital duplicators and 17 ink drums; a Fab Lab with multiple FDM and resin 3D printers, a large-format CNC router, multiple vinyl cutters, and a 12x24 inch and a 26x55 inch laser cutter; a Ceramic Studio with throwing wheels, a glaze room, multiple new electric and gas kilns, and a raku firing area; a Letterpress Studio with two Vandercook letterpresses and a variety of metal and wood type sets; a Sculpture Studio with a wood shop and dedicated areas for clay modeling and spray painting; a Photography Studio equipped for both analog and digital processes, including a photographic lighting studio; and fully equipped Painting, Drawing, and Printmaking Studios
  • Participation requirements: leading a 2-hour hands-on workshop for 15–20 students on a topic relevant to the artist's envisioned project; providing a one-hour artist talk on their practice, including a Q&A session; and serving as a guest panelist for a day-long Portfolio Review
