Short Description

Curatorial team LeuWebb Projects and Heavy are working with the Scotia Place Project Committee to develop dynamic public art at Scotia Place, Alberta’s newest premier sports and entertainment venue. This landmark facility will play a key role in the transformation of Calgary’s downtown, the emerging Culture + Entertainment District, and its surrounding spaces.

Each Plaza Artwork budget will be split into two scopes as detailed below. The selected proponent(s) will be expected to manage the budget assigned to the Artist Scope.

Artist/artist teams are eligible to express interest in creating work for either one or both of the
following sites:

  1. “Northwest Plaza” total project budget, including artist fees: $ 375,000 CAD
  2. “Southwest Plaza” total project budget, including artist fees: $1,125,000 CAD

“Northwest Plaza” budget: $375,000 CAD, exclusive of GST

Artist Scope (managed by the artist):

  • Concept generation
  • Concept renderings, 3D models, animations, maquettes, precedent images, sketches,
    and any other supporting materials to adequately explain the concept and intent
  • Concept development
  • Presentations of the concept(s)
  • Artist consulting / engagement work as required
  • Consideration and intent of the overall construction methodology, materials, methods,
    material finishes, and typical design details
  • Recommendation and vetting of subcontractors / suppliers
  • Participation in design and budgeting workshops
  • Schematic and design development
  • Technical drawings showing scale, key features, intent, materiality, design details, and
    connections.
  • Collaboration with the project team to develop artworks that meets the project goals
    and constraints

Art Development & Construction Scope (managed by the PACM):

  • Design and development construction / feasibility support
  • Engineer engagement / management
  • General contractor and site coordination
  • Material procurement
  • Project management
  • Safety
  • Fabrication
  • Installation / Logistics
  • Subcontractor coordination and management
    The total Northwest Plaza budget includes, but is not limited to: artist fees, materials,
    fabrication, installation, consultation, public engagement (artist time only), travel, insurance,
    sub-consultant fees, studio costs, and contingency.

“Southwest Plaza” budget: $1,125,000 CAD, exclusive of GST

Eligibility

Local, national and international artists or artist-led teams or collectives, with public art experience are invited to apply. Artists with ties to the Calgary area as well as Indigenous artists who have connections to the Treaty 7 Nations, Métis Nation, and the Urban Indigenous Community of the Treaty 7 area are encouraged to apply.

Submission Requirements

a) Letter of Interest (maximum of 750 words)
Please indicate which plaza location (or both) that you’re applying for. Describe your understanding of the opportunity and its possibilities. Include any connection to the Calgary area. Provide your contact information, including name, address, phone number, email address, and website (if applicable). Describe past project experience relevant to this opportunity.
b) A current resume / Curriculum Vitae
List applicable examples of relevant work, educational experience and your contact information; maximum three pages per team member.
c) Images (maximum of 10 pages)
Up to 10 pages of images of past work. Include for each project a brief description of the commission, title and date, including budget and client reference, and information on project partners, where applicable.
d) Ensure your submission package responds to the detailed Evaluation Criteria in the Selection Process section.
e) Please compile your submission materials into a single PDF file (maximum file size 20Mb).
