The Sala de Arte El Brocense opened its doors in October 1980, at its original premises on Calle Doctor Marañón, as an avant-garde space designed by architect Ángel González. Since its inauguration, it has become an essential reference point for contemporary art in Extremadura, born with the aim of offering a quality space for visual arts creation. The space was renovated in 1995 to create a larger, more open environment, and today operates from Calle San Antón in Cáceres. Over more than four decades, it has hosted established figures alongside emerging artists gaining recognition on the current scene, and is the channel through which the Diputación de Cáceres' significant Contemporary Art Collection has been built.
The Premio de Artes Plásticas "Sala El Brocense" was created in 1998, and has become a benchmark prize at the national level and, increasingly, at the international level. The prize is organized by the Diputación Provincial de Cáceres (Cáceres Provincial Council) through its Área de Cultura y Deportes (Culture and Sports Department), and prize-winning works are added directly to the Diputación's own contemporary art collection, which today ranks among Spain's most notable public collections in this field.

The Diputación Provincial de Cáceres, through its Área de Cultura y Deportes, has reopened the call for its Premio de Artes Plásticas "Sala El Brocense," now in its 29th edition and established as one of the most consolidated and recognized fixtures on the national artistic calendar. Over nearly three decades, the competition has brought together hundreds of artists from across Spain and abroad in Cáceres, serving as a showcase for some of the most interesting proposals in contemporary creation today. Beyond the competition itself, each edition enriches the province's cultural heritage, as winning works are incorporated into the Diputación's contemporary art collection.

Eligibility
- Open to artists of any nationality or place of residence
- Applicants must be over 18 years of age
- Applicants must be up to date with payments to Social Security, the State Tax Agency (Hacienda Estatal), and the Diputación de Cáceres itself
- A maximum of two original works may be submitted per artist
- Submitted works must not have been previously awarded a prize in another competition or award
Program Benefits & Awards
- Total prize fund of €25,000, distributed across five prizes:
- First Prize: €10,000
- Second Prize: €6,000
- Third Prize: €4,000
- Two Fourth Prizes: €2,500 each
- Prize amounts are subject to applicable tax legislation, with legally established withholdings applied; all taxes on the prize amount are the winner's responsibility
- Prize-winning works become the property of the Diputación Provincial de Cáceres and are incorporated into its permanent collection
- The jury may declare any of the prizes void (desierto) if it considers this appropriate
- No travel, accommodation, or shipping costs are covered by the organizer — see Additional Details below for cost responsibilities

Additional Details
- Selection is carried out by a jury of individuals with recognized prestige in the art world and specific qualifications; selected works form part of an exhibition at Sala de Arte El Brocense, with the jury announcing the prize-winning works at the exhibition's opening
- Jury decisions are final and not subject to appeal
- Prior to the formal resolution, the winner must authorize the managing body to obtain updated certificates confirming they are current on tax and Social Security obligations, as well as fiscal obligations with the Diputación de Cáceres; if this authorization is not given, the winner must supply the updated certificates themselves
- All costs of sending and transporting works to and from the venue are the artist's own responsibility; the Diputación does not participate in these costs and assumes no responsibility for loss or damage to work in transit
- For international shipments, the Diputación will not cover customs clearance costs — the work will be returned to its author in such cases
- No insurance policy is taken out on submitted works by the organizer; artists who wish to insure their own work for transit may arrange this privately
- Participation implies acceptance of all points in the official bases and of the jury's decisions; non-compliance can result in exclusion from participation or, if necessary, annulment of an awarded prize
- Participation also authorizes the Diputación to cite artists' names and reproduce photographs of their works in any eventual catalogue and in its own promotional programme for the prize
