Organizer Information

South Square Centre (Bradford, UK) is an established artist-led contemporary arts hub located in Thornton, West Yorkshire. Originally a set of 19th-century workers’ cottages, the centre was transformed into a community arts space in 1982 and now operates as a multidisciplinary cultural venue.

The organisation supports artistic production through studio spaces, exhibitions, workshops, and public programming. It is home to resident artists and creative practitioners across various disciplines, alongside a gallery, archive, café, and community facilities. South Square Centre is known for its strong engagement with local communities and its commitment to supporting emerging artists in the region.

The Joan Day Bursary continues this mission by providing financial and curatorial support to early-career artists working primarily in painting.

Title & Description

South Square Centre Joan Day Bursary 2026 – Solo Exhibition Opportunity (UK)

The Joan Day Bursary 2026 is an Exhibition and Grant opportunity offering £1,000 to an emerging Yorkshire-based artist to develop and present a solo exhibition at South Square Centre in Bradford.

This opportunity supports artists working primarily in Painting, inviting them to create a new body of work inspired by experimentation, personal research, and material exploration. The bursary is dedicated to the memory of Joan Day, a painter who lived and worked in West Yorkshire, and reflects her artistic legacy through support for emerging talent.

The selected artist will be commissioned to develop and present a solo exhibition scheduled for September 2026, with an opening event on Friday, 4th September. The bursary is intended to support production, material costs, and installation of the new work within the gallery space.

Artists are encouraged to use this opportunity to expand their practice, develop new ideas, and present work in a professional exhibition context. The programme prioritises painters whose work demonstrates originality, conceptual clarity, and a commitment to contemporary practice.
