The Tartu City of Literature Spring Residency 2026 is part of the UNESCO City of Literature network, connected globally through the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, which includes cities dedicated to promoting literary culture. The residency is coordinated by the Estonian Literary Society in cooperation with the Tartu Literature House Foundation, with support from several local literary institutions. The Tartu City of Literature Spring Residency 2026 invites writers and translators from around the world to apply for a two-month creative residency in Tartu, Estonia, during April–May 2026. This residency offers a unique opportunity for creative practitioners to immerse themselves in a vibrant literary scene and contribute to the 2026 Tartu International
Literary Festival Prima Vista, which will take place from 11–16 May 2026 with an exploration of themes like identity, technology, imagination, and culture. Eligibility
This opportunity is open to writers and translators of any nationality who meet the following criteria:
- Applicants must be writers or translators translating from Estonian into other languages or otherwise engaged in literary creation.
- Applicants should demonstrate a meaningful connection between their work and the theme of the 2026 Prima Vista Literary Festival (“True and Fake”), which explores ideas related to identity and culture.
- While the residency is open internationally, preference may be given to those whose work aligns with the festival’s thematic focus.
- Applicants should possess sufficient language skills (typically upper intermediate English or Estonian) to participate in local activities and events, as inferred from similar residency criteria.

Participants selected for the Tartu Spring Residency receive the following benefits:
