Short Description
The Work Trade Residency at A-Z West, stewarded by High Desert Test Sites (HDTS), offers selected participants an opportunity to exchange labor for lodging and studio access. Residents work up to 15 hours per week assisting with site maintenance, ceramics production, and other specialized tasks. The residency is immersive, focusing on rural and experimental living in the California high desert.
Residency Duration: 2–4 weeks
Seasons:
Fall: September 15 – December 15 (Apply by May 1, Notification: June 15)
Spring: January 15 – June 1 (Apply by September 1, Notification: October 15)
Location: A-Z West, California high desert (near Joshua Tree National Park)
Work Requirement: Up to 15 hours per week

Eligibility
Open to artists, designers, and individuals with relevant skills
Must have experience in ceramics, woodworking, weaving, graphic design, or grounds maintenance
Comfortable with manual labor and “roughing it” in a desert setting
Must have a personal vehicle (public transportation is not available)

Lodging: A micro-apartment with a bed, desk, and kitchenette

Outdoor communal facilities: Shared kitchen, shower, and composting toilet
