Organizer Information

Pedantic Arts (Pedantic) is a Pittsburgh arts residency organization based in the city's Garfield neighborhood. It operated for five years under the co-direction of Casey Droege Cultural Productions and Headwater Media. In Summer 2026 it became an independent non-profit with 501(c)(3) status. Co-founder Henry J. Simonds, founder and director of Headwater Media, serves as President of its inaugural Board of Directors. The organization is recruiting its first Executive Director.

Its stated mission is to connect creative thinkers from different disciplines and encourage cross-disciplinary, intellectual conversation. Its core programming is two annual residencies, each hosting one artist, one curator, and one writer. A derivative program, The Grant, offers research stays of up to two weeks. Unlike traditional residencies, Pedantic does not require a final deliverable.

Title & Description

Pedantic Open Call for Residents and Grantees: Summer 2027 and Fall 2027 Terms

Pedantic Arts is accepting applications from creatives and researchers for two four-week residency terms in 2027 and for the Pedantic Research Grant. It seeks applicants whose practices engage visual art, curation, and writing. Two residency cohorts are available, each made up of one artist, one curator, and one writer. Two Research Grant places are also available.

Residents spend four weeks in a hybrid residential and commercial building in Garfield. The residency is deliberately non-production focused and emphasizes connections and conversations. Each resident is paired with a Pittsburgh-based guide working in a similar field, who introduces them to activities, resources, and local professional contacts.

The Research Grant is a one- or two-week independent stay for a visual artist, curator, or writer conducting self-motivated, Pittsburgh-related research. Pittsburgh must be a focal point, though the research need not be entirely specific to the city.
