Bunnell Street Arts Center is a nonprofit arts organization founded in 1991 in Homer, Alaska. Its programs include visual-art exhibitions, artist residencies, performances, workshops, Artist in Schools initiatives, and community-engagement projects. The organization’s mission is to foster artistic inquiry, innovation, and equity while strengthening Alaska’s social, physical, and economic fabric. Its Artist in Residence program has historically been supported by organizations including the Rasmuson Foundation, Homer Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, and National Performance Network.
Title & Description
Alaska AIR Program 2027–2028
Alaska AIR Artist in Residence Program 2027–2028 invites artists from Alaska, elsewhere in the United States, and internationally to spend approximately one month in Homer developing new work while engaging with the local community.
The residency emphasizes artistic experimentation and community connection. Proposed projects may explore themes including accessibility, inclusion, sustainability, stewardship, skills sharing, exchange, connection, joy, and community well-being. Community engagement can take the form of workshops, performances, collective art-making, Artist in Schools activities, screenings, readings, exhibitions, or other artist-led approaches.

Eligibility
The opportunity is open to international, U.S., and Alaska-based artists at any stage of their careers. Applicants must be 18 or older and may apply individually or as a collaborative team. Artists should demonstrate a coherent body of work and propose a project that can meaningfully engage with Bunnell and the Homer community.
Program Benefits & Awards
- $2,000 artist stipend for a one-month residency, prorated for shorter or longer stays
- Round-trip travel to Homer, valued at up to $1,000
- $250 materials stipend
- Private bedroom and private bathroom in shared accommodation
- Studio/gallery space at Bunnell Street Arts Center
- Access to equipment and facilities including video equipment, sound equipment, printing presses, workshop furniture, piano, and related production resources
One to four fully funded residencies are normally awarded annually, with additional or partially funded residencies possible depending on available funding and scheduling.
Residents are expected to participate in public programming, generally through an artist talk, workshop or outreach activity, and a presentation, exhibition, performance, screening, or other sharing of work developed during the residency.
Application Fee
The application fee is $25 USD. Needs-based fee waivers are available upon request.
