Overview
The LungA School is an independent, artist-led educational institution and folk high school situation based in Seyðisfjörður, a small town nestled in a fjord in East Iceland. Operating deliberately outside traditional systems of production and instrumental logic, the school functions as an experimental platform, communal living environment, and site-specific artistic situation. Facilitated across various spaces throughout Seyðisfjörður, LungA School brings together international and local participants, educators, guest artists, and thinkers to explore collective ways of being, art-making, and land-based practices.
Objectives
LungA School aims to cultivate, disturb, and transform conventional notions of aesthetics, learning, perception, and judgment. By providing an experimental educational experience outside formal credit/degree systems, the institution strives to support individuals in developing a stronger sense of self, exploring human-nature connections, and blurring the boundaries between art and everyday life. The school seeks to foster an integrated social practice where seeing, thinking, doing, and community living serve as tools for personal, collective, and artistic transformation.
Programs / Opportunities
- ART Program: A 12-week residential program hosted twice a year (spring and fall) for up to 18 participants, combining workshop weeks with guest artists, studio experimentation, group reflection, and open events.
- LAND Program: A 12-week residential program hosted twice a year (spring and fall) for up to 16 participants, focusing on site-specific exploration, seasonal movements, local cultural traditions, environmental engagement, and group living in Seyðisfjörður.
- RADIO (Radio School): A free, 10-month participatory schooling experiment and global broadcasting platform operating on-air (FM 107.1) and online via Seyðisfjörður Community Radio.
Target Community
- International & Local Participants: Young adults (prioritizing ages 18 to 25 under Icelandic folk high school guidelines, with exceptions for older lifelong learners) interested in artistic experimentation, nature, and collective living regardless of prior formal art training.
- Guest Educators & Practitioners: Visiting artists, thinkers, craftspeople, local residents, guest lecturers, and workshop leaders.
