Description & Background

Myoju (明珠)—meaning “shining pearl”—is an artist residency and cultural space rooted in the quiet richness and history of Lake Biwa in Omihachiman, Shiga, Japan. Located 35 minutes from Kyoto in a historic merchant town that hosts the Biwako Biennale, the initiative operates alongside a jewelry brand utilizing local freshwater pearls and a small gallery café. The space functions as a gentle meeting point and creative ecosystem where international and local perspectives intersect against an Eastern historic landscape.

Objectives

Grounded in the belief that each person and artist carries a unique inner radiance, Myoju aims to create spaces where art and people connect through lived experiences and intentional relationships. The residency strives to provide a setting where Western contemporary perspectives meet traditional Japanese heritage, encouraging artists to research, create, and engage deeply with their surroundings. By fostering sustained community exchange and dialogue, the platform seeks to nourish artistic practices and support meaningful cross-cultural growth.
