Organizer Information

Myoju 明珠—meaning “shining pearl”—is an independent artist residency and contemporary cultural initiative rooted in the quiet richness of the Shiga Prefecture, Japan. In addition to the residency program, the host operates a local jewelry brand utilizing sustainable freshwater pearls sourced directly from Lake Biwa, alongside a small gallery café that functions as a gentle meeting point for public dialogue. The organization is built on the core belief that each person carries a unique inner radiance. By designing a dedicated creative ecosystem where international and local perspectives naturally meet, grow, and exchange, the program connects contemporary art practices with local communities through shared experiences.

Title & Description

The Myoju Artist Residency Program (Autumn 2026 Cohort).

Submissions are officially open for this low-residency fellowship situated within the historic merchant town of Omihachiman, widely known as the home of the Biwako Biennale and located approximately 35 minutes outside of Kyoto. The residency offers a reflective, intention-driven environment where Western contemporary perspectives meet a deeply historic Eastern landscape shaped by the nature and profound history of Lake Biwa. The program allows chosen residents to live, research, create, and engage with their surroundings in an ongoing exchange defined by meaningful relationships and creative autonomy.
