Short Description:

The Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), one of North America’s largest art museums, houses over 120,000 works, including significant Indigenous and Canadian art, European masterpieces, and contemporary collections. Serving one million annual visitors, the AGO champions global dialogues rooted in Toronto’s diverse communities.

As Curatorial Coordinator, you will support the Indigenous & Canadian Art Department in exhibitions, acquisitions, and collection management. Reporting to the Fredrik S. Eaton Curator, Canadian Art, you’ll collaborate with artists, lenders, donors, and internal teams to advance the AGO’s curatorial vision.

Responsibilities

Exhibitions & Loans:

  • Coordinate logistics for exhibitions, including loan agreements, shipping, and artist relations.
  • Prepare labels, checklists, and installation photography.
  • Organize events (openings, talks, donor dinners).

Acquisitions & Collections:

  • Manage Canadian Cultural Property Review Board (CCPERB) applications.
  • Liaise with donors, appraisers, and dealers for acquisitions/deaccessions.
  • Update the TMS database and maintain accession files.

Donor & Committee Relations:

  • Act as primary contact for Curatorial Committee members (including AGO Board).
  • Coordinate VIP passes for art fairs and donor communications.

Department Administration:

  • Track budgets, process invoices, and onboard interns/fellows.
  • Schedule meetings and manage curators’ travel.

Eligibility:

  • 3-5 years directly related administrative experience in an arts organization, with a focus on Indigenous & Canadian Art
  • Comprehensive knowledge of collection and digital asset management systems, like The Museum System (TMS) and NetX
  • Demonstrated knowledge of office practices and procedures
  • Well-developed negotiation, organizational, interpersonal, and verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of contemporary art practices as well as direct experience working with both living artists and artist estates and representatives
  • Detail-oriented with experience proofreading, editing, and formatting reports and documents
  • Experience working with large collections
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in arts and culture, or equivalent work experience
  • Knowledge of foreign languages an asset
