Braunschweig University of Art (HBK Braunschweig) is an internationally oriented university of the arts in Germany with the right to award doctoral and post-doctoral degrees. With around 1,000 students, the university brings together fine arts, art education, performing arts, design, visual communication, art history, and media studies. Through Braunschweig Projects, HBK awards seven artistic fellowships and one curatorial fellowship each year on behalf of the State of Lower Saxony.

Braunschweig Projects 2027/2028: Curatorial Fellowship
The Braunschweig Projects 2027/2028 Curatorial Fellowship is a 12-month programme designed to support an emerging curator in developing their professional curatorial practice. The selected fellow will develop and realise a curatorial concept for the final exhibition of the Braunschweig Projects 2027/2028 programme.
The curator will participate in the jury meeting that selects the artistic fellows and will subsequently work closely with the selected artists throughout the programme. In addition, the fellowship encourages the development of an independent curatorial project, ideally in connection with a museum, collection, scientific institution, or cultural organisation in Lower Saxony.
The proposed project should consider research, preparation and implementation, budgeting, communication, and potentially educational or accompanying programmes. Collaboration with HBK's academic and artistic staff, as well as its students, is encouraged.

Eligibility
The fellowship is intended for emerging curators with at least three years of initial curatorial experience. Applicants may be from Germany or abroad, and applications are accepted in German or English.
Applicants should demonstrate previous curatorial work through a portfolio and provide an external reference from higher education, the arts, and/or culture.
The fellowship cannot be awarded to applicants who will have regular third-party income, such as salary payments, work grants, or state funding, during the fellowship period.
Program Benefits & Awards
- €1,600 per month for 12 months.
- Rent-free studio apartment in Braunschweig, designed for one person. A contribution of €250 per month toward incidental living costs is charged.
- Up to €4,000 exhibition subsidy to support exhibition activities.
- €2,000 travel budget.
- Opportunity to develop and realise a curatorial project within HBK's institutional and professional network.
- Participation in the selection jury for the artistic fellows.

The fellow is expected to spend at least eight months during the HBK lecture period in Braunschweig.

The selection will be made by the Board of HBK Braunschweig based on the recommendation of an expert jury. At the end of the fellowship, the fellow must submit a short final report describing the activities undertaken.
