Organizer Information

The residency “Cartographie du territoire #5” is organized by the Espace Jean de Joigny, a municipal contemporary art space located in Joigny, France, under the cultural direction of the Ville de Joigny. The institution is dedicated to supporting contemporary creation through exhibitions, educational programs (EAC—Éducation Artistique et Culturelle), public mediation activities, and an annual research-based artist residency.

Since 2017, Espace Jean de Joigny has developed a sustained curatorial program that combines exhibitions of established and emerging artists with site-specific residencies. The institution operates in collaboration with regional cultural authorities, notably the DRAC Bourgogne–Franche-Comté, reinforcing its mission of public cultural service and artistic experimentation.

Situated in a historically rich town recognised as a “Plus Beaux Détours de France” and a “Pays d’art et d’histoire,” Joigny provides a layered socio-cultural environment combining heritage, biodiversity, and contemporary social transformation. The residency program is specifically designed to activate this territorial complexity through artistic research.

Title & Description

Residency for Research & Creation + Exhibition – Cartographie du territoire Residency #5

This open call invites a professional visual artist to undertake a research-based residency in Joigny, culminating in a public exhibition at Espace Jean de Joigny (7 November – 20 December 2026). The project centers on the theme of “cartography” understood in an expanded artistic sense, focusing on how the artist perceives, reimagines, and reconstructs the city of Joigny and its surrounding environment.

Rather than traditional geographic mapping, the residency encourages the creation of fictional, utopian, speculative, or conceptual cartographies. The territory can be interpreted broadly—from underground layers to aerial perspectives, from physical landscapes to imagined or symbolic geographies. Artists are invited to develop an original research process that translates the territory into a personal artistic language.

The residency includes a strong expectation of producing new works specifically created on-site, although existing works may also be incorporated into the final exhibition. The exhibition itself may take multiple forms, including installation, performance, process-based work, or hybrid formats.

A key dimension of the project is its pedagogical and mediational role, with possible integration into local educational programs (EAC initiatives and cultural contracts with the city). Artists are encouraged to consider participatory or educational approaches in dialogue with local audiences.
