The Fundació Joan Miró – Centre d’Estudis d’Art Contemporani is a globally recognized cultural institution based in Barcelona. Founded in 1975 by the renowned artist Joan Miró himself, the foundation operates as a private entity governed by a board of trustees representing the artistic, governmental, and business sectors.
The institution houses an exceptional collection and archive dedicated to Miró’s work while also functioning as a dynamic platform for contemporary artistic production. Its building, designed by Josep Lluís Sert, is considered a landmark of modern museum architecture, fostering a dialogue between art, space, and environment.
Over the past five decades, the foundation has established a strong international presence through exhibitions, research, publications, and educational programming. With an annual budget of approximately €14 million and a team of around 80 professionals, it aims to position itself as a leading institution bridging historical legacy and contemporary artistic discourse, particularly as it enters its 50th anniversary phase with renewed strategic ambitions.

Director at Fundació Joan Miró (Barcelona)
The Fundació Joan Miró is launching an international open call to appoint a new Director responsible for leading the institution’s artistic, strategic, and operational vision. This role represents a high-level leadership opportunity within one of Europe’s most influential modern and contemporary art institutions.
The selected candidate will define and implement the foundation’s artistic programme, oversee its collections and research initiatives, and strengthen its international positioning. The role requires balancing curatorial excellence, institutional leadership, public engagement, and financial sustainability.
Candidates are expected to propose a comprehensive institutional project that addresses programming, collection management, audience development, research, collaborations, and long-term sustainability.
The Role Overview
- Position: Director
- Contract Type: Senior executive employment (in accordance with Spanish Royal Decree 1382/1985)
- Duration: 4 years (renewable for an additional 4 years)
- Salary: €115,000 gross annually (subject to increases based on applicable agreements)
- Reporting to: Board of Trustees (Patronat)
- Work Regime: Full-time, exclusive dedication
- Location: On-site in Barcelona
Position & Tasks
The Director will assume responsibilities across multiple domains:
Strategic & Institutional Leadership
- Define and implement the foundation’s strategic vision
- Align institutional activities with governance objectives
- Advise the board on cultural positioning, risks, and opportunities
Artistic Direction & Research
- Develop exhibition programming and collection strategies
- Oversee conservation and development of artistic heritage
- Promote research on Joan Miró, contemporary, and emerging art
Public Engagement & Institutional Relations
- Represent the foundation nationally and internationally
- Build partnerships with cultural institutions and stakeholders
- Expand and diversify audiences
Operational & Financial Oversight
- Collaborate with management to ensure financial sustainability
- Develop revenue strategies, including sponsorships and partnerships
Governance
- Execute board decisions and maintain transparency and accountability

Eligibility
- Open to international applicants (including non-EU candidates)
- An advanced university degree is required
- Minimum 3 years of senior leadership experience in museums or contemporary art institutions
- Strong expertise in modern and contemporary art
- Proven experience in exhibition programming and institutional leadership
- Language requirements:
- Knowledge of one official Catalan language (Catalan or Spanish)
- Commitment to acquire the second within one year
- Fluent English required; French or additional languages are an asset
