Organizer Information
The Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) is Ireland’s leading national institution for modern and contemporary art, located in Dublin. Established in 1991 and housed in the historic Royal Hospital Kilmainham, IMMA functions as both a museum and a dynamic research hub supporting artistic production, critical discourse, and public engagement. The institution has developed a strong international reputation for its residency programs, which emphasize interdisciplinary exchange, research-driven practices, and site-responsive methodologies. Through initiatives such as the Dwell Here programme, IMMA positions itself as a facilitator of long-term artistic inquiry, connecting local Irish contexts with global artistic and intellectual networks. The museum actively engages artists, curators, designers, and researchers through exhibitions, residencies, and public programming that explore cultural memory, politics, and contemporary societal shifts.
Title & Description
Dwell Here: One Month Residency Open Call / 2027
The Dwell Here: One Month Residency is a research-focused residency program designed for artists and interdisciplinary practitioners interested in developing site-responsive work within the Irish context. Hosted by IMMA, the program invites participants to “dwell” — both physically and conceptually — engaging deeply with place, time, and critical urgencies.
Residents are expected to undertake independent research over a four-week period, with three weeks dedicated to self-directed inquiry and one week embedded within a collaborative Research Assembly. These assemblies function as intensive, week-long forums bringing together residents, mentors, and invited contributors for collective dialogue, experimentation, and knowledge exchange.
The residency is structured around key thematic frameworks, including Technologies of Peace, The Irish Paradigm, and The Museum as a Site of Vibration. These themes encourage participants to explore geopolitical, historical, and cultural narratives connected to Ireland while drawing parallels to global contexts.
Participants may activate their research through diverse formats such as workshops, performances, exhibitions, talks, or open studios. The program prioritizes process over production, fostering critical thinking, interdisciplinary exchange, and long-term research development rather than finished outcomes.
