Organizer Information
Argos, formerly Argos Centre for audiovisual arts, is a Brussels-based institution dedicated to artist films and video. The organisation was founded in 1989 in Brussels to stimulate and promote the then still-emerging Belgian audiovisual arts scene, initially organising screenings in cultural centres across the country while beginning to distribute videos to festivals, art institutions, and television networks internationally. Since 1994, argos has been primarily subsidised by the Flemish Community, and in 1999, after several relocations across the city, it settled into its current home in a former storage facility in Brussels' historic 'Les Quais' district — a building gradually converted into a multifunctional platform housing two exhibition spaces, a projection room, a library, a climate-controlled archive, studios, offices, a café, and a bookshop. The organisation has been led by a succession of directors since its founding by Frie Depraetere and Koen Van Daele in 1989, including Paul Willemsen, Katerina Gregos, Rolf Quaghebeur, and, most recently, Niels Van Tomme from December 2018 to February 2024. As the source describes, argos is home to Belgium's largest collection of artist moving-image works, and its programme spans exhibitions, collections, public programming, distribution, and its library, exploring the past and present of audiovisual arts while helping shape its future.
