The Finnish Cultural Institute in New York (FCINY). Depending on the discipline, the 2027 residencies are conducted in collaboration with prominent local partners: Pioneer Works (Visual Arts), Ervin Latimer / Aalto University (Fashion), and The Cooper Union (Architecture).
Title & Description:
Applications are open for the FCINY Residency Programs 2027.
These three-month residencies focus on networking, dialogue, individual artistic research, and creative work in New York City.
- Track A: Visual Artists (Jan–Mar 2027): Partnering with Pioneer Works in Brooklyn; includes a dedicated studio space and access to expansive multi-disciplinary labs.
- Track B: Fashion Design (Jul–Sep 2027): Tailored for research and community-building; includes intensive mentorship from fashion designer Ervin Latimer.
- Track C: Architecture (Oct–Dec 2027): Partnering with The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture at The Cooper Union; includes access to school premises, networks, and library workstations as a Visiting Scholar.

Eligibility:
- Geography: Applicants MUST either be Finnish citizens OR be based in Finland at the time of applying.
- Experience Level: Applicants must have at least 2–3 years of proven professional practice or have completed a university-level degree in a relevant field.
- Language: Applicants must be reasonably fluent in spoken and written English.
- Group Size & Housing: Open to individuals or working groups of up to two people. However, the provided residency apartment is a one-room studio space with no separate bedroom. If applying as a duo, both artists MUST be willing to share the open studio space and the two single beds.
Program Benefits & Awards:
- Housing: A furnished one-room studio apartment in Hamilton Heights’ Sugar Hill in North Harlem (includes utilities, linens, and Wi-Fi).
- Travel Stipend: FCINY will cover one return flight up to a maximum of $1,000 USD per selected resident.
- Working Grant: A monthly working grant of €800 EUR.
Application Fee & Program Costs:
- Application Fee: Free to apply.
- Artist Responsibility: Artists are strictly responsible for their own material costs, remaining living expenses, and securing their own comprehensive health and travel insurance for the duration of the stay.
Application Requirements:
- File Formatting / Strict Constraint: All attachments MUST be merged into ONE single PDF document. All materials MUST be written in English.
- Required Contents:
- Project plan for the residency (maximum 2 pages).
- Short motivation letter and a description of specific aims for the NYC stay.
- Resume / CV.
- A maximum of 3 selected works.
How to Apply?
Submit your merged PDF via the specific online application form corresponding to your discipline. (Note: If applying as a working group of two, submit only one joint application).
Key Dates:
- Application Deadline: May 6, 2026, at 23:59 Finnish time (4:59 PM NY time). (Late applications will not be accepted).
- Notification of Results: End of June 2026.
- Residency Dates: Staggered throughout 2027 based on the selected track.
