Organizer Information

The Gwangju Biennale Foundation is a leading cultural institution based in Gwangju, South Korea, internationally recognized for organizing one of Asia’s most influential contemporary art biennales—the Gwangju Biennale. Established by the Gwangju Metropolitan City, the foundation plays a central role in fostering global contemporary art discourse, with a strong emphasis on socially engaged, critical, and research-driven artistic practices.

The organization has historically collaborated with prominent curators, theorists, and institutions worldwide, positioning the Gwangju Biennale as a key platform for experimental curatorial production and international exchange. The GB Academy International Curator Course (GBICC) continues this legacy through advanced training for emerging curators and cultural practitioners.

Title & Description

Gwangju Biennale Foundation: 2026 GB Academy International Curator Course (GBICC)

The 2026 GB Academy International Curator Course (GBICC) is an intensive, field-based educational program designed for emerging curators, art theorists, critics, and cultural practitioners working across diverse global and local art contexts. Rooted in the conceptual legacy of Okwui Enwezor’s “Global Institute” (2008), the program builds on more than a decade of international curatorial education and exchange.

The 2026 edition is closely connected to the 16th Gwangju Biennale, engaging participants directly with its Artistic Director, curatorial team, participating artists, and institutional frameworks. Through seminars, site visits, group discussions, and direct exposure to exhibition-making processes, participants will critically examine how curatorial practices are shaped by institutional, social, and geopolitical conditions.

The thematic focus—“You Must Change Your Default”—extends the Biennale’s theme “You Must Change Your Life” into curatorial methodology, encouraging participants to interrogate their own working structures and reimagine curatorial practice as a transformative and reflective process.

The program is conducted entirely in English and emphasizes critical discourse, collaboration, and practice-based learning in an immersive biennale environment.
