ENDURION is a European Union-funded research and innovation project, supported through the Horizon Europe programme and the Clean Hydrogen Partnership (Grant Agreement No. 101192485), developing next-generation Anion Exchange Membrane Electrolyser (AEMEL) technology for efficient, durable, and low-cost green hydrogen production. The project brings together European universities, research institutes, industrial partners, and innovation organizations, aiming to develop membrane-electrode-assembly materials and cell designs using earth-abundant materials to support the European Green Deal and the transition to climate neutrality. This art competition is a dissemination subproject of ENDURION, coordinated by Wasabi Innovations.
Title & Description
European Green Hydrogen Mural & Calendar Art Competition 2027
The ENDURION Project invites EU resident illustrators, muralists, designers, and visual storytellers to submit original artistic interpretations of how green hydrogen can contribute to a sustainable, climate-neutral, and energy-secure future for Europe. Through large-scale public art and a calendar publication, the competition aims to engage citizens, policymakers, industry leaders, researchers, and future generations in the transition to clean hydrogen technologies. The winning artwork will be transformed into a 200–250 m² public mural on a prominent building in either Sofia, Bulgaria, or Torino, Italy, while twelve additional artworks will be featured in a limited-edition 2028 Green Hydrogen Calendar distributed to European stakeholders.
Theme
Green Hydrogen: Powering Europe's Sustainable Future. Artists are asked to illustrate at least two or more of the following sub-themes: green hydrogen as a clean energy carrier (production via electrolysis using renewable energy, decarbonisation of transport/shipping/aviation/industry, energy storage and system resilience); green hydrogen as a sustainable industrial feedstock (replacing fossil-derived hydrogen in steelmaking, chemicals, fertilizers, fuels, and manufacturing); European innovation in hydrogen technologies (membrane electrolysers, sustainable materials for hydrogen production); and Europe's green transition (clean cities and transport, sustainable industry, energy independence, cooperation between science, industry, citizens, and policymakers).

Program Benefits & Awards
- First Prize: €2,500 contract to openly publish the work under the ENDURION project logo
- First Prize: selection for transformation into a public mural of approximately 200–250 m²
- First Prize: professional promotion through ENDURION communication channels and a video
- First Prize: recognition at ENDURION dissemination events, featuring the artist's profile
- First Prize: invitation to participate in mural implementation activities, subject to agreement and logistical arrangements, within a budget of approximately €12,000 covering materials, transfers, flights, accommodation, equipment rental, and media coverage (the artist will either commission the mural directly or collaborate with another mural artist and/or external partner to commission it)
- Calendar Selection Awards: twelve additional artworks will each receive a €200 contract to publish the work in the ENDURION Green Hydrogen Calendar 2028 (printed in approximately 500 copies and distributed to Members of the European Parliament, national ministers and policymakers, diplomats, industry and research leaders, and other hydrogen/energy stakeholders); each selected artwork will be accompanied by the artist's biography, profile, and website, a description of the artwork, and an explanation of its relevance to green hydrogen and sustainability

Additional Details
- Selection process: submitted artworks are evaluated by the ENDURION Steering Committee, composed of eleven Principal Investigators representing the ENDURION consortium; the jury's decision is final.
- Evaluation criteria: Artistic Excellence 30% (creativity, originality, visual quality); Communication Impact 30% (ability to communicate the importance of green hydrogen, public engagement potential, clarity of message); Relevance to Theme 25% (alignment with competition objectives, representation of sustainable hydrogen technologies and applications); Mural Feasibility 15% (suitability for large-scale public display, effectiveness in communication).
- Mural suitability requirements: strong visual impact from a distance, clear storytelling and symbolism, scalability to 200–250 m², public accessibility and broad audience appeal, and durability of the visual concept when enlarged.
- Artists are encouraged to acknowledge, directly or symbolically, European collaboration, scientific research, public investment in innovation, and sustainable technological development. The final mural and calendar will include official EU funding acknowledgement and ENDURION project branding as required by grant agreement obligations.
- Intellectual property: artists retain copyright ownership of their artwork. By submitting, artists grant ENDURION an exclusive, royalty-free right to display the artwork for evaluation, publish selected works in dissemination materials and the calendar, reproduce the winning artwork as a public mural, and promote the competition/project through print and digital media.
- Contract conditions: the selected artwork cannot be reproduced in mural or calendar form by others until 2037; if reproduced by the artist in any other format, it must credit the ENDURION project Grant ID, website, and EU funding acknowledgement, and must include a written reference to its use in the ENDURION mural and calendar.
