Organizer Information

The Independent and Freelance Photojournalist Award (IFPA) is presented by Xposure, the Xposure International Photography & Film Festival held annually in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. Xposure is powered by the Sharjah Government Media Bureau and describes itself as a global meeting point for photographers, filmmakers, and creative storytellers, running for seven days each year with exhibitions, workshops, portfolio reviews, and talks. Alongside the IFPA, Xposure also runs the International Photography & Film Awards and the Global Focus Project, both aimed at giving visibility to emerging and independent voices in visual storytelling. The IFPA specifically is dedicated to independent and freelance photojournalists working without institutional backing, recognizing photography grounded in journalistic integrity and produced in challenging reporting conditions.

Title & Description

Independent and Freelance Photojournalist Award (IFPA)

The IFPA honors independent visual reporting across three categories: Spot News, Environment, and Solutions. Each category recognizes one Category Winner and one Category Runner-Up. According to the current official Rules page, each Category Winner receives a USD 5,000 cash prize, exhibition of their work at the Xposure festival, and finalist recognition, while each Category Runner Up receives an official certificate and an online presentation of their awarded essay. Entrants must submit a 12-image photo essay assigned to a single category, and recognition is strictly category-specific, with no aggregated ranking across the three categories.

Theme

No single theme is stated for the award as a whole; instead, entrants choose one of three fixed categories to submit into: Spot News (urgent events of public consequence), Environment (stories of the natural world and human impact), and Solutions (reporting on how communities respond to challenges).

Additional Details

  • A panel of industry expert judges evaluates all essays on criteria including news value, impact, consistency, relevance, and visual storytelling; judges' decisions are final and binding
  • Entrants retain full copyright of their work; by entering, winners and nominated entrants grant Xposure non-exclusive rights to use high-resolution images to promote the festival and the IFPA across all media, including the Xposure website, festival publications, and archives
  • Entrants may also enter the Xposure International Photography & Film Awards or the Global Focus Project, but a participant cannot hold a cash placing in more than one Xposure programme in the same festival year; IFPA results take precedence over other Xposure awards in the event of a conflict
  • By participating, entrants agree to release Xposure, the Sharjah Government Media Bureau, and their partners from liability related to the contest or use of submitted material
  • IFPA reserves the right to cancel or modify the contest due to unforeseen circumstances
  • Conflicting source figures: a separate, differently-dated Xposure page describing the IFPA states a single USD 15,000 first-place award rather than the three-category, USD 5,000-per-category structure described on the official Rules page fetched for this article (which was last modified 26 July 2026, the most recent version available). This appears to reflect a change in the award's prize structure between award cycles; the USD 5,000 per-category figures from the current live Rules page have been used throughout this article as the authoritative, up-to-date terms, but applicants should verify current prize terms directly with Xposure before submitting.
