Each year, From the Top's Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award Program provides 20 outstanding young musicians who demonstrate financial need with a $10,000 scholarship to support advanced musical training, fulfilling Jack Kent Cooke's vision of enabling promising students with financial need to develop their talents. Since 2005, From the Top has awarded over $4.2 million in scholarships to 428 talented young people. As of July 1, 2026, From the Top is a program of KERA in North Texas. The award is administered by From the Top in partnership with the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, a private foundation that supports high-achieving students with financial need.

Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award
The Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award is a one-time, non-renewable, need-based award of up to $10,000 given in conjunction with full participation in From the Top's Learning and Media Lab Fellowship. Each year, From the Top chooses approximately 20 pre-collegiate musicians ages 8–18 to receive the Award, given to driven and committed pre-collegiate musicians with financial need to help offset the often prohibitively expensive costs of studying classical music at a high level. An application for the Award is also an application to From the Top's Learning and Media Lab Fellowship program — applicants do not need to complete two separate applications. If selected, recipients must also participate fully in the Learning and Media Lab Fellowship program; the Award cannot be granted without full participation in the Fellowship.

Eligibility
- Classical instrumentalists, vocalists, and composers, ages 8–18, who are full-time elementary, middle, or high school students and have not yet entered college
- Applicants must have strong musical ability and a willingness to participate in From the Top's Learning and Media Lab Fellowship
- Must demonstrate unmet financial need, with evidence of a family income unable to meet the costs of musical pursuits — 90% of past recipients come from families with an annual household Adjusted Gross Income under $60,000, and applicants with AGI over $100,000 are not encouraged to apply, though extenuating circumstances (cost of living, medical expenses, dependents, etc.) are considered
- Applicants must demonstrate a strong commitment to learning and creativity, inside and outside of the classroom
- Applicants must demonstrate drive, initiative, maturity, leadership, and a commitment to giving back to one's community
- This award is open to international and U.S. students, but applicants must currently study and/or reside full-time in the United States
- High school seniors graduating in 2027 must apply by the November 9, 2026 deadline to be considered; the Award can only be given to students still enrolled in high school or below
Program Benefits & Awards
- Up to $10,000 to apply toward instrument purchases, summer camp tuition, college audition travel expenses, private lessons, or other music-related needs
- Participation in From the Top's Learning and Media Lab Fellowship, including an appearance on NPR's From the Top broadcast/podcast
- Cash award, disbursed for the recipient's use toward the specific expense categories listed above — not a general stipend

Additional Details
- The Award cannot be given independently of the Fellowship — recipients must complete the full Learning and Media Lab Fellowship curriculum.
- The Award is a one-time, non-renewable grant; it cannot be received more than once.
- Selection for the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation's separate Young Scholars Program (a 7th-grade academic scholarship track) makes a student ineligible for the Young Artist Award, as the two programs are mutually exclusive.
- Applications are individually reviewed on exceptional musical achievement, unmet financial need, academic achievement, and strength of character, with musical achievement and financial need given the most weight.
