Artspace Aotearoa is a leading contemporary visual arts organisation based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand. Founded by artists and arts workers in 1987, the organisation was established to support contemporary art practices that were underrepresented in Auckland and beyond. Today, Artspace Aotearoa develops critical discourse, supports artists, and connects Aotearoa's contemporary art context with international conversations.
The organisation operates with a strong commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi) and seeks to deepen its engagement with Mātauranga Māori, Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa, and tangata Tiriti contexts. Its programme and organisational direction are guided by Pūtātara, its strategic direction to 2030.

Kaitohu Director – Artspace Aotearoa
Artspace Aotearoa is seeking a creative and experienced leader to become its next Kaitohu Director. This is a senior Visual Arts and Art Management position offering the opportunity to shape the creative vision, programme, organisational development, and public profile of one of Aotearoa New Zealand's significant contemporary art institutions.
The Director will lead the implementation of Artspace Aotearoa's strategic direction, develop an ambitious annual programme, advance critical discourse in contemporary art, and strengthen relationships across Aotearoa and internationally. The role combines artistic leadership with financial, organisational, and team management.

- Direct reports: Deputy Director and Assistant Curator

Position & Tasks
- Lead the artistic vision and implementation of Artspace Aotearoa's strategic direction to 2030.
- Develop and oversee a bold annual contemporary art programme.
- Advance critical discourse and support artist-led practices.
- Provide artistic, financial, and organisational leadership.
- Lead, develop, and support the Artspace Aotearoa team.
- Work closely with the Tiaki Board, Deputy Director, and curatorial team.
- Strengthen the organisation's identity, public profile, and engagement with contemporary art.
- Develop fundraising strategies and contribute to long-term financial sustainability.
- Build relationships with artists, cultural organisations, funders, stakeholders, and international partners.
- Represent Artspace Aotearoa publicly as a spokesperson and sector leader.
- Continue developing the organisation's commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi across programming, governance, relationships, and organisational culture.
- Contribute to sector leadership and advocacy in Aotearoa and internationally.

Eligibility
The position is intended for an experienced arts leader with a strong record in contemporary visual arts programming and management. Candidates should demonstrate leadership experience, fundraising knowledge, excellent communication and negotiation skills, and the ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders.
