Through exhibitions, festivals, educational initiatives, and international competitions, the prefecture has become an important destination for comic artists and manga enthusiasts from around the world.

One of the region’s most internationally recognized initiatives is the Manga Kingdom Tottori International Comic Art Contest, an annual global competition that supports emerging and established manga creators across different age groups and artistic backgrounds. The contest was developed to encourage artistic exchange, discover new talent, and strengthen international appreciation for manga storytelling and comic art.

The competition welcomes submissions from creators worldwide and has gained increasing international attention for its accessible application process, inclusive eligibility criteria, and generous monetary awards. The contest also reflects Japan’s broader commitment to supporting visual storytelling traditions while embracing contemporary approaches to comic creation.

By hosting this competition, the Tottori Prefectural Government aims to foster creativity, encourage young artists, and strengthen global engagement with manga culture. Selected works are recognized by a professional committee composed of manga artists, researchers, and comic industry professionals, helping participants gain visibility within the international comic art community.

Title & Description

15th Annual Manga Kingdom Tottori International Comic Art Contest

The Manga Kingdom Tottori International Comic Art Contest 2026 invites manga artists, illustrators, comic creators, and visual storytellers from around the world to submit original manga works inspired by the annual theme: “Clothes.”

Now in its fifteenth edition, this international contest provides an important platform for creators working in manga and comic storytelling to showcase their artistic vision and narrative skills. The competition encourages participants to interpret the theme creatively through character design, narrative structure, visual symbolism, fashion, culture, emotion, or social commentary.

Artists may submit works in one of three competition categories:

  • One-frame manga (1 page)
  • Four-frame manga (1–8 pages)
  • Manga stories between 4 and 24 pages

Participants are also allowed to submit multiple entries and apply to multiple categories, making the competition highly accessible for both emerging and experienced creators. Collaborative works are accepted as well.

The contest welcomes both traditional hand-drawn works and digital submissions. Entries may be produced in black and white, full color, or a combination of both. Artists may create works in Japanese or in their native language, emphasizing the international and multicultural nature of the competition.

A notable aspect of this year’s guidelines is the contest’s position regarding artificial intelligence. While minor supplementary use of AI-generated materials is permitted, works predominantly generated by AI—including stories, compositions, or drawings—will not be accepted. This reinforces the competition’s commitment to originality and artist-driven creativity.

Winning works will be selected through a two-stage review process conducted by a professional selection committee consisting of manga artists, researchers, and industry experts. In addition to monetary awards, winners will gain international exposure and invitations to the official award ceremony in Japan.

The competition represents an exceptional opportunity for artists interested in manga, comics, storytelling, illustration, and narrative-based visual arts to connect with one of Japan’s most respected international comic art initiatives.
