Organizer Information

The Micro Living Architecture Competition is organized by Volume Zero Competitions, an international platform dedicated to conceptual and experimental architecture competitions. Volume Zero has built a reputation for hosting globally accessible design challenges that encourage speculative thinking in architecture, urbanism, and spatial innovation. Their competitions typically attract architects, students, designers, engineers, and interdisciplinary thinkers from around the world, with a strong emphasis on conceptual rigor rather than built execution.

The organization positions itself at the intersection of architectural experimentation and global discourse on future living conditions. By focusing on themes such as micro-housing, climate adaptation, and urban density, Volume Zero provides a platform for emerging and professional designers to engage with urgent spatial and societal challenges through speculative design proposals. The “Micro Living” series is one of its recurring flagship competitions, now in its fifth edition, reflecting ongoing interest in compact, adaptive, and resilient housing systems.

Title & Description

Micro Living Architecture Competition 2026 – Edition #5: Tiny House 2026

The Micro Living Competition challenges participants to rethink the future of housing under extreme spatial constraints. The core question of the 2026 edition is:

What if 250 square feet was all the city could give you?

Participants are asked to design a 250 sq ft micro-living module for two residents, where all essential functions of domestic life—sleeping, cooking, bathing, working, eating, and storage—must coexist within a highly efficient spatial system. The competition emphasizes not just compactness, but spatial intelligence, adaptability, and transformation over time.

The proposal should move beyond the idea of a static tiny house and instead explore a dynamic living system, where spaces shift according to daily routines and changing life patterns. The design must reflect contemporary urban realities such as mobility, hybrid work environments, climate instability, and evolving notions of privacy and community.

In addition to the individual unit, participants must imagine a collective housing system of 25 units (housing 50 residents) in a chosen urban context. This transforms the challenge from a single dwelling into a scalable urban prototype, focusing on shared infrastructure, social interaction, and sustainable density.

The competition encourages a shift in architectural thinking—from isolated objects to interconnected systems, where housing becomes a network of interdependent spatial units capable of supporting resilient urban living.
