Organizer Information

The Contours residency programme is jointly developed by three institutional actors in the French contemporary art ecosystem: the Regional Department for Cultural Affairs of Île-de-France (DRAC Île-de-France), the TRAM network (TRAM network), and the Cité internationale des arts (Cité internationale des arts).

These organizations operate at the intersection of cultural policy, artistic production, and international exchange. DRAC Île-de-France is responsible for implementing the French Ministry of Culture’s policies at the regional level, particularly in supporting contemporary creation and cultural mobility. TRAM is a network of contemporary art institutions across Paris and the Île-de-France region that fosters collaboration between museums, art centers, and exhibition spaces. The Cité internationale des arts is one of Europe’s most established residency centers, hosting hundreds of artists annually across disciplines and nationalities, providing both studio space and a dense professional ecosystem.

Together, these partners designed Contours in 2024 as a research-oriented residency program specifically targeting curators and art critics working outside France within the European Union.

Title & Description

Contours – Research-Based Curatorial Residency in Paris / Île-de-France

Contours is a professional residency program dedicated to curators and art critics aiming to develop research within the French contemporary art scene. The program is explicitly non-production-based and instead focuses on intellectual inquiry, field research, and professional networking.

Selected participants are invited to immerse themselves in the Parisian and Île-de-France art ecosystem through structured encounters, institutional visits, and exchanges with artists and cultural professionals. The residency emphasizes curatorial research development, contextual understanding of the French art landscape, and integration into international curatorial networks hosted by the Cité internationale des arts.

Each edition selects two laureates, reinforcing an intimate and highly targeted research environment.
