Organizer Information

The Vincent van Gogh Photo Award is an international photography competition inspired by the artistic legacy, atmosphere, and visual philosophy of Vincent van Gogh. The award celebrates contemporary photography that explores emotion, light, color, atmosphere, and human perception through creative visual storytelling. Organized in the Netherlands, the initiative connects modern photographic practices with themes associated with Van Gogh’s artistic vision and expressive use of light.

The competition aims to support photographers at different stages of their careers, including emerging artists, professional photographers, and students. Through its annual awards program, the organization encourages photographers to submit work that reflects technical excellence, conceptual strength, and emotional resonance while maintaining authenticity in photographic practice.

The competition places strong emphasis on ethical image production and photographic integrity. While moderate image enhancement is accepted, the organizers explicitly discourage excessive digital manipulation or compositing techniques that fundamentally alter the original photograph. By focusing on authenticity and visual sensitivity, the award seeks to honor photography as both a documentary and artistic medium.

In addition to the main Vincent van Gogh Photo Award, the organizers also host a dedicated Student Award category designed to encourage participation from photography students and emerging young practitioners.

Title & Description

Vincent van Gogh Photo Award 2026 – “Spirit of Light”

The Vincent van Gogh Photo Award 2026 invites photographers from around the world to submit original digital photographs responding to the theme “Spirit of Light” (through the eyes of Vincent van Gogh).

The competition seeks visually compelling photographs that explore the emotional, symbolic, atmospheric, and poetic qualities of light. Inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s expressive relationship with color and illumination, participants are encouraged to interpret the theme creatively through portraiture, landscape, conceptual photography, documentary imagery, abstraction, or experimental visual approaches.

Artists may submit up to three photographs. The organizers welcome works that demonstrate technical skill, originality, and emotional depth while remaining faithful to the authenticity of photography as a medium. Although post-production and image enhancement are allowed within reasonable limits, significant digital manipulation is prohibited.

Accepted editing practices include:

  • Sharpening
  • HDR adjustments
  • Contrast correction
  • Saturation and color adjustments
  • General image enhancement

However, the following are not permitted:

  • Extreme digital manipulation
  • Combining multiple photographs into entirely new compositions
  • Major facial alterations that create unrealistic appearances
  • Excessive distortion of original image content

The competition requires all submissions to remain fundamentally photographic in nature. Winning participants will be asked to provide original RAW files for verification purposes.

Submitted photographs must:

  • Be digital images only
  • Be submitted in RGB JPG format
  • Have a minimum of 3000 pixels on the longest side
  • Be 300 dpi resolution
  • Be between 2 MB and 5 MB in size whenever possible
  • Be free of watermarks, logos, or decorative frames

Participants retain full copyright ownership of their submitted images. By entering the competition, photographers grant the organizers permission to use the submitted works for promotional and exhibition purposes related to the award, with proper photographer credit.

The competition strictly prohibits pornographic, violent, sexual, or offensive material. The foundation reserves the right to reject submissions that violate these standards.
