Overview
Artist Commons is an international, fully virtual artist development program and educational platform designed for early- and mid-career visual artists. Organized around a flexible virtual campus, the year-long program operates across four ten-week quarters with new cohorts matriculating bi-annually in January and July. Bringing together creators from over 16 countries, Artist Commons combines small-group accountability with rigorous art history, studio practice, creative craft, and professional development.
Objectives
Artist Commons aims to provide working artists with a structured, affordable alternative or supplement to traditional MFA programs, enabling them to deepen their practice and build a sustainable life in art. By pairing rigorous peer feedback with actionable business skills and critical art-philosophical frameworks, the platform seeks to help creators develop their unique voice, clarify goals, navigate art world institutions, and establish lasting global professional networks without geographical barriers.
Programs / Opportunities
- Year-Long Virtual Cohort & Mentorship Program: A four-quarter online program combining weekly small-group (approx. 10 artists) feedback sessions, one-on-one mentor meetings, portfolio reviews, and structured peer accountability.
- Weekly Lecture Series & Masterclasses: Interactive webinar-style lectures, guest panels, and interviews covering modern/contemporary art history, the philosophy of art, the business of art (pricing, contracts, editioning), and audience outreach.
- Visiting Artists in Residence Series: Studio visits, process lectures, live technical demonstrations, and candid Q&As hosted by practicing international visual artists and creative technologists.
- Professional & Critical Skill Workshops: Writing clinics (for artist statements, bios, and grant proposals), reading groups, close-looking exercises, and curated opportunities resources (residencies, grants, open calls).
- Virtual Campus & Regional Meetups: A custom mobile/web community application for asynchronous work feedback, reflection prompts, and lecture replays, alongside occasional in-person meetups in select global cities.
Target Community
- Early- & Mid-Career Visual Artists: International creators across all visual mediums (including painting, sculpture, photography, video, installation, digital art, tech-based art, and interdisciplinary practices), whether self-taught or art-school educated.
- Mentors, Lecturers & Visiting Artists: Art historians, curators, art philosophers (such as Dr. Rebecca Millsop), gallery owners, and professional working artists serving as cohort mentors and guest speakers.
- Global Virtual Art Network: A peer network of visual artists across 16+ countries engaging through digital cohorts, reading groups, and local meetups.
